You don’t need to have everything figured out before you start. We’ll guide you through each stage of the process and help you understand the different options available, so together we can create a one-of-a-kind handmade rug that feels right for your project.
Your budget helps us tailor the design, colours, materials and rug-making technique to bring your custom rug to life.
Think about what inspires you and the look or feeling you want your rug to evoke, whether it’s a colour, artwork, pattern, memory or place. Bring any references that help communicate your vision, including what you like and don’t like.
Your rug can be made in almost any size or shape. Choose from over 1,900 yarn colours in our studio to create a palette that complements your design and space, then add texture and depth with different rug-making techniques and weaving methods.
Choose from flat weave, hand tufted or hand knotted techniques, each offering a different look, feel and level of durability.
Sampling is an optional step that lets you see and feel your rug design before committing to the full rug. You can order a 60×90 cm sample featuring a section that best represents your design.
We’ll prepare the final drawings and specifications for your approval before placing the order with our weavers. Your rug will then be carefully made, taking 8–12 weeks for flatweave and hand tufted rugs, or 12–16 weeks for hand knotted (longer for very intricate designs), plus about 2 weeks for shipping.
Your rug will arrive at our Melbourne showroom for a final quality check before being delivered to you.

Molly Rugburn is an Australian rug studio born from a passion for interiors, architecture and thoughtful design. The studio brings together textiles and spatial design, drawing inspiration from materiality, texture, form and atmosphere. Our studio approaches each rug as an extension of the space itself. Rugs have a grounding element that brings warmth and character into a space. We create custom pieces for residential and commercial interiors by working closely with clients, designers and artists to develop rugs that feel personal. Each piece is designed with an emphasis on craftsmanship, functionality and timeless design, balancing artistic expression with everyday living.
Types of rugs you can create
Every rug is made by hand by our partner artisans in Nepal and India. The technique shapes how your design looks, feels underfoot and wears over time.
Hand tufted
Yarn pushed through a backing with a tufting gun to build a soft, raised pile. Cut and loop piles, carving and varying heights add texture and depth — a plush choice for bedrooms and living rooms.
Hand knotted
Individual knots tied by hand around the rug’s foundation threads, from 60 to 150 knots per square inch. The finest and most detailed technique, for intricate designs and a dense, velvety finish.
